Sankhuwasabha of is considered to be one of the most beautiful and peaceful hill districts of eastern Nepal. The region is located in the lap of Mt. Makalu (8,463 meters), the fifth highest mountain in the world. Geographically, the district is located within the mighty Himalayan range, covers an area of 3,480 square kilometers, and elevates from 457 meters to 8,465 meters. Due to the vast elevation differences, there are many different ecological zones and the district can experience all variations of climate. The district is also home to more than 20 ethnic groups and spoken languages.

Being decorated with unique natural beauty, rich diverse cultures, and immense bio-diversity, the district has been one of the more popular tourist destinations in eastern Nepal for more than 60 years. Mt. Makalu, which is considered by many to be one of the most beautiful peaks in the world, is located in northern part of the district and dominates the northern horizon. In addition to Mt. Makalu, the district is also decorated with other snow capped mountain peaks that include Mt. Kumbhakarna (5,850 meters), Mt. Lumbasuma (5,800 meters), Mt. Panch Pokhari (5,000 meters), Mt, Jaljale (4,823 meters), amongst others as well.The district contains many attractive and culturally significant locations to visit and enjoy the beauty of the surrounding nature. Makalu Barun NationalPark and Buffer Zone Area, world-renowned for its bio-diversity, is situated in Makalu VDC along the trek to Mt. Makalu Base Camp. About 1,300 trekkers and mountaineers visit the area every year and return home changed by an unforgettable experience.

Khandbari, situated on 1036 meters above the sea level, is the Headquarter of Sankhuwasabha Distinct of Eastern Nepal. The hillside town can be reached in about one hour by bus from Tumlingtar Airport. The road to Mt. Makalu Base Camp goes through Khandbari market. The tourist who go to Makalu stay over night there. There are hotels m where there are good faclities of bed and Breakfasts. They also serve you drinks as you like.
The are shops where you can any goods like trekking sticks, sleeping bags clothes as you like. There are places to visit in Khandbari . There is a children's home (Orphanage) on the side of Khandbari Bazaar. If you liked to visit there you can reach there in about 15 minutes on foot.In Khandbari you can have the facilities of internet in the corner of the city.

Khandbari Orphanage is one ten minutes walk from the heart of Khandbari. The hillside town can be reached in about one hour by bus from Tumlingtar Airport. The road to Mt. Makalu Base Camp goes through Khandbari market. The tourist who go to Makalu stay over night there.
Getting there and away
Sankhuwasabha can be easily got by 40 minutes domestic flight from Kathmandu. There are daily flights from Kathmandu to Tumlingtar. From Tumling tar you can take a jeep to Khandbari. It takes about one hour to get there from Tumling by jeep
